Welcome to the facility

The alarms started in the Workers Quarters. Nobody said why. The elevator was the only way up, and it was already full when you got in. It didn't make it. You wake up in the wreck, far below the levels you know, in the part of CATHA that was sealed for a reason.

Noise is the only thing you cannot afford

Every generator you start makes noise, and every noise travels. Doors have weight, hatches stick, the flashlight switch clicks. Something down here heard the elevator fall, and it has been listening since. There is no weapon in CATHA. There is what you can hear, and what can hear you.

The lower levels are a sealed labyrinth

Workers Quarters, generator halls, vent runs and maintenance tunnels stacked on top of each other, built and rebuilt over decades by people who never expected anyone to walk them alone. Power comes back one section at a time, and with it the doors, the machines, and whatever was asleep in them.

At its core, CATHA is about patience

Walking is the pace. Every room is meant to be read before it is crossed. You scavenge what the workers left, bring machinery back to life by hand, and decide each time whether the light is worth the sound. Chapter 1 ends at the door to Maintenance. What's behind it isn't in the manual.
